Legal matters can often be complicated and lengthy. The process of applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Insurance (SSI) benefits is no different. If you’re disabled and unable to work to provide for yourself and those you love, any sort of waiting period can understandably be very stressful. As a result, we’re often asked how an applicant can go about checking the status of his or her disability claim.

The good news is that applicants have several options available. What options are best utilized often depends on where the claim itself is in the overall process.

  • If your claim is in the initial stages and you have recently filed your application: If your claim is in its very early stages, and you have not yet received a denial or an approval, but simply want to know the status of your application, you have a number of options. You can contact your local Social Security Administration office, you can contact the disability examiner who has been specifically assigned to your case, or check the status of your claim online at www.ssa.gov.
  • If your claim has been denied and you have filed a request for reconsideration: Filing a request for reconsideration is usually the first step of the appeals process. If you find yourself in this stage of the process, the best way to check the status of your claim is usually to contact your local Social Security Administration office or the disability examiner assigned to your case.
  • If your claim is at the appeal hearing stage: This is the next level of the appeals process, where your claim is typically scheduled for a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge. At this point, if your claim has not yet been transferred, you can contact your local Social Security Administration office or the disability examiner assigned to your claim, as with the other preceding stages of the process. If it has been transferred, however, your best option is usually to contact the Office of Disability Adjudication and Review. By doing so, you will typically receive a more efficient and detailed response.
  • If your claim is being heard by the Appeals Council: This is the final stage of the appeals process and one that many claims don’t reach. If you do reach this stage of the process, however, you can contact the Appeals Council at 1-703-605-8000 for an update on the status of your claim.

While this information is intended to be helpful guidance on how to remain updated and informed about the status of your claim, it is ultimately no substitute for the advice and guidance of an attorney who is personally familiar with your case.
